On January 7, a video clip showing a young man in Spiderman costume being detained by security officers on Nguyen Hue Street went viral on social networks.

Vice chairman of Ben Nghe Ward People's Committee, Vo Quoc Hung, said that the incident occurred at 10 pm on January 6 when security officers patrolled the area and found that the man was selling sweets and did not have his ID card with him.

"He was then brought to the local police station and fined VND 350,000 (USD15.50)," Hung said.

The arrest has annoyed many performers in the area who complained that they have faced with constant harassment from local authorities.

Le Trong Tung said that on the evening of January 6, he was also driven away by police while wearing a Mickey Mouse costume and selling sweets on Nguyen Hue Street.

"We’re students and we just want to earn some extra money by selling sweets and taking photos with visitors," Tung said. "And I think we also help bring more colour to the pedestrianised street."

A lawyer from Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association, Nguyen Anh Minh, said that it is not fair to compare performers together with street vendors who are banned from the pedestrian street.

"These performers should be allowed on the pedestrian streets like they are in many other countries," Minh said. "However, they should bring ID cards, especially after 10 pm as police may check."
