The General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam for the next five-year term will be voted on January 27, within the framework of the ongoing 12th National Party Congress, according to the grand event’s agenda.
On Friday, the delegates are scheduled to discuss the documents submitted to the quinquennial congress, which is slated for January 20-28.
The 11th Party Central Committee for the current term will present the report on personnel preparation for the next tenure, 2016-20, before opinions are collected to determine the number of members for the 12th Party Central Committee on Saturday.
Members of the congress will talk through the standards and structure of the committee the following day, while reviewing the list of eligible candidates for positions in the 12th Party Central Committee.
After thorough discussion and consideration on the personnel documents, the delegates will fill in the forms to nominate themselves or others for the membership of the committee and the documents will then be collected.
On Monday, January 25, the chairing delegation of the congress will announce the official list of candidates, as well as review the possible cases in which certain nominees would like to withdraw from the election, before forming the ballot counting committee.
The delegates will cast their votes on January 26 and the process will be closely monitored by the ballot counting committee. The newly elected members of the Party Central Committee for the next tenure will then be announced.
On January 27, the new Central Party Committee will convene its first plenary meeting within the framework of the congress, during which the members will elect the Politburo, General Secretary, Secretariat, and Central Inspection Commission and its chairman.
The official results of the elections will be announced in a press conference on January 28, when the National Party Congress concludes.
