A police officer has been suspended in northern Vietnam for allegedly beating a neighbour and badly injuring him 10 days ago for publicly abusing him.
Tran Minh Doan, deputy head of a police station in Ha Nam Province, reportedly took Vu Van Dieu with the support of two other men to a police station on September 10 and thrashed him.
Dieu, 51, was later rushed to a hospital in Hanoi a dozen kilometers away with four broken ribs.
Doan admitted to beating him, claiming Dieu had come to his house the previous evening, stood outside and loudly insulted his family.
“I beat Dieu and I take full responsibility,” he said, adding he had become too angry to control himself after being insulted several times by his neighbor.
Doan offered to pay the hospital fees but Dieu has refused it.
According to Nguyen Van Thuc, the head of their residential area, Dieu is a heavy drinker who walks around and insults other people in the area.
He confirmed the officer’s claim that Dieu had insulted him many times.
