Leaders laud normalization of ties in Washington DC

Senator McCain assured the more than 250 guests who gathered to mark the 20th anniversary of the normalization of Vietnam-US relations that the two countries have successfully put the past behind and are looking forward to the continued development of strong bonds of friendship.
Former US President Bill Clinton, who signed the declaration normalizing relations with Vietnam on July 11, 1995, did not attend but sent video greetings to the anniversary celebration.
In the taped message the former president said the achievements in Vietnam-US relations were made possible thanks to the constructive joint efforts on both sides to rise above the past, overcome differences, and promote shared interests looking toward the future.
Normalization of Vietnam-US relations is my proudest accomplishment. It has helped heal the wounds of war and build friendships in a world increasingly divided by war and confrontation.
Vietnam’s Ambassador to the US Pham Quang Vinh in turn emphasised that the decision to normalise diplomatic relations with Vietnam 20 years ago was of historical significance.
It has lifted bilateral relations to a new chapter, from enemy to friend and now to that of a comprehensive partnership based on respect for the United Nations Charter, international law, and each other’s political systems, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
