Politics - By deploying its Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil drilling rig to the East Vietnam Sea for oil and gas exploration on June 25, China has violated international practice and the common commitment of Vietnam and China on negotiating to delineate maritime boundaries in the overlapping area outside the mouth of the Tonkin Gulf, said Dr. Tran Cong Truc, the ex-chief of the Vietnamese government’s Border Committee. The rig is now located north-northwest of Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago. Society -- The ninth session of the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) closed on Friday after more than a month of working, during which the legislature passed 11 laws and 9 resolutions, and discussed 15 draft laws. -- The law-making National Assembly is closely following the current tension in the East Vietnam Sea and will issue a resolution on this issue when necessary, spokesperson Nguyen Xuan Phuc said at a media meeting after the closing ceremony of the ninth session of the Vietnamese legislature on Friday. -- Yin Wen Sheng, 47, former head of the Electricity Department of the Chinese city of Dongguan, who was found taking a bribe of 18 million Chinese yuan (US$2.9 million) by China’s police in March, was arrested at a hotel in the south-central city of Nha Trang by Vietnamese officers on June 18 and was handed back to the Chinese side two days later. -- A male Vietnamese tourist at My Lan Resort on the Phu Quoc Island died in a collision between a watercraft he hired to drive and a passenger boat off the Bai Sao beach on Friday. -- The People’s Court of the southern province of Dong Nai on Friday sentenced two men, Hoang Van Yen and Hoang Van Phuc, both 40, to death on drug charges. The men, from the central province of Nghe An, were arrested in 2013 after being caught trafficking over 23kg of drugs.  Business -- A large project to build infrastructure for the Hoa Lac High-tech Park in Hanoi was broken ground on Friday with a total investment of US$450 million, of which $400 million comes from Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) and the remaining amount is the Vietnamese Government’s counter capital. The project is expected to be complete in 2018.  -- The three ministries of Finance, of Industry and Trade, and of Planning and Investment on Friday proposed that the Government allow for this year’s production of crude oil to be increased by 400,000-500,000 tons. Lifestyle -- A painting exhibition with the topic of “Vietnam 1954-1975” kicked off at the NUS Museum in Singapore on Friday. The event features the collection of the former Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Dato’ N Parameswaran. On display are posters, woodcuts and drawings that highlight Vietnam’s resistance war against American invaders in the period.
