Franz Schubert: The Greatest Love & the Greatest Sorrow
Sun 10 May 2015, 7 – 9 pm
Wellspring Saigon – Saigon Pearl
92 Nguyen Huu Canh, Binh Thanh District, HCMC
Each person is a life story, each experience is a separate chapter with ups and downs of sorrows, ecstasies, sadness, and happiness…
An artist is no exception. Through his or her story, perhaps we glimpse a scene from our own life?!
The difference, if any, maybe the intensity of those ups & downs in the artists life, they may exceed the boundary of the normal vibrations.
Fortunately, when language cannot express all feelings, that is when music shows its power.
Let us “read” together a life story in music: “The Greatest Love – The Greatest Sorrow”.

Europe Gala Concert with The Red Socks Brassquintett from Munich
Hanoi: 08 and 09 May 2015, 8 pm
Hanoi Opera House
HCMC: Sun 10 May 2015, 8 pm
HCMC Opera House
In celebration of Europe Day the European Union Delegation and the Goethe-Institut are pleased to present a gala concert with the Red Socks Brassquintett from Munich.
The brass ensemble Red Socks Brassquintett has a wide-ranging repertoire, reaching from old masters such as Bach or Handel to American composers of the 20th century, from jazz to Argentine Tango. The special composition of the ensemble with five brass instruments promises an impressive sound. A very special highlight of their program is the performance with traditional German alphorns. These unusual wind instruments, up to three meters long, were played in the Alps, their sound reaching far across the mountain peaks. Now they can be heard in the Hanoi Opera House, in a joint performance with traditional Vietnamese instruments of the Bamboo Ensemble New Vitality, directed by Dong Quang Vinh.
The Red Socks Brassquintett, famous for its unusual programs, has regularly performed in Germany and abroad since it was founded in 2010. All members are classically trained musicians and play in major orchestras. Shortly after its founding, the ensemble was awarded a scholarship from the Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now Foundation. Since then, the quintet has received further awards and scholarships as well as winning several international competitions, such as the International Brass Competition Passau and the International Jan Koetsier Competition, and has references from numerous major political and cultural institutions.

Reinhard Kleist – From Berlin to Hanoi as “Artist in Residence”
Artist in residence: 10 – 31/05/2015
From Goethe Institut:
Reinhard Kleist, one of the most famous comic-artists in Germany, will live and work in Hanoi as „artist in residence“ in May.
With the graphic novels “Cash – I See a Darkness”, a novel about the American singer Johnny Cash, and “the boxer” which tells the story of the Jewish boxer Hertzko Haft, the Berlin artist gained worldwide attention. At the moment Reinhard Kleist is working on a graphic novel about the singer Nick Cave.
Graphic Novels often deal with historic, political, and social topics. Reinhard Kleist, too, picks up these issues and develops his plot mainly by reference to individual cases. His latest publication “The Dream of Olympia” tells the story of the sprinter Samia Yusuf Omar who represented Somalia at the Olympic Games in 2008 in Peking. Her dream of Olympia ends tragically, when she drowns offshore of Malta during and attempted escape from Islamic extremists.
In the context of the 5th European Literature Days the successful graphic novel-artist will bring the legendary musician Johnny Cash back to live at the occasion of a spectacular Live Drawing-Event. Inspired by live-music of the most well-known country singer of all times, he will create illustrations to each song. Thanks to a camera in his back, the audience is able to witness the process of the works’ genesis live.
Reinhard Kleist 1
From 10th to 31th of May the award-winning comic-artist will show selected works of his graphic novels at the Goethe-Institut. During an artist talk on the 20th of May, he will discuss and explain his works. On this occasion he will also talk about comic-art in Germany and Vietnam with artists.
During his stay at the Goethe-Insitut, Reinhard Kleist will blog his impressions from Hanoi and its inhabitants. In so doing he will share the moments and scenes which he captures by pencil with the public on a daily basis.
Besides a workshop with students of the art school of Hanoi, Kleist will conduct a workshop with young, professional comic-artists at the Goethe-Institut.

5th European Literature Days in Hanoi
07 – 10 May 2015
Goethe Institut, L’Espace, Casa Italia
See detailed program below
From Goethe Institut:
Following the success of recent years EUNIC, the association of European cultural institutions and embassies, presents for the fifth time the European Literature Days in Hanoi. Literature enthusiasts can look forward to readings and workshops as well as an unusual Comic Concert and compelling short films. From crime novels through short stories to children’s books, there is something for readers of all ages. The coordination for this year’s event has been undertaken by the Institute Français – L’Espace.
Eight European countries – Denmark, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Israel, Poland and Sweden – will present works which have recently been published in Vietnamese, in collaboration with several major publishers.
Picture Books, illustrations and Comics: The Power of Images
This year, the focus of European Literature Days is the interplay between image and word, in comics and children’s books.
Sweden celebrates the freckled redhead Pippi Longstocking with a party in honor of her 70th birthday, featuring readings, painting and crafts. And it’s not only the Swedes who are putting young readers in the focus of this year’s European Literature Days: British author Jasper Fforde explores new territory with his detective novels for children and young people – and he will personally come to Hanoi at the invitation of the British Council to meet to his young readers here. The adventures of a giant pear are at the center of the fantasy story of the Dane Jakob Martin Strid. And the Italian children’s book was also inspired by culinary delights: the mouse Geronimo Stilton lives on an island made of cheese. At the invitation of the Goethe Institute, children’s book author Annette Köhn tells stories in her playful comic about the little dragon Leto, who finds new friends in Vietnam. The award-winning German children’s book “Rico, Oskar und das Herzgebreche” tells of two unlikely friends and their adventures. Françoize Boucher takes on the world of young people in her humorous books, presented by L’Espace.

He presents two short films and reads from his short stories, which are now also available in Vietnamese. This will be followed by a reading with Le Chuc presenting one of the most famous novels of psychological literature, “The Trial” by Franz Kafka. Reading pleasure of a special kind is offered with the novel “Other Pleasures” by Polish author Jerzy Pilch, while the book “Lettera ad un bambino mai nato” by the Italian author Oriana Fallaci provides food for thought. Literature Days will close at the Goethe Institute with the comic artist Reinhard Kleist doing live drawing to a concert of the music of legendary country singer Johnny Cash. More illustrations and comics by Reinhard Kleist can be seen in the exhibition that opens on the same evening at the Goethe-Institut.
The extensive program is complemented by bookstands of the publishers in the Goethe-Institut, in which many books will be available at special prices. There is also an exhibition of new books from Germany at the Goethe Institute in cooperation with the Frankfurt Book Fair.

“Someone must have been telling tales about Josef K. for one morning, without having done anything wrong, he was arrested”. This is the first sentence of the most famous novel written by the virtuosic writer Franz Kafka. On the morning of his 30th birthday, Josef K. is arrested, without being conscious of any guilt and with nobody telling him the reason for the arrest. Step by step the narrator Josef K. tries to cope with this mysterious incident and to solve the case. As the nature of this crime is neither revealed to him nor the reader, Kafka achieves in creating suspense and an incredibly psychologically sophisticated plot.
The term kafkaesque also derives from the novel. It is mainly used in the context of situations which are similar to the one of Josef K.: the experience of facing an absurd and hostile bureaucracy which has developed a momentum of its own.
