Customs officers at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City caught a Vietnamese woman hiding 2 kilograms of methamphetamine in her suitcase when she arrived in the city early on Tuesday morning.

The woman, 31, simply identified as H., had travelled through several countries without being detected before arriving in Vietnam at 2 am November 26, said airport customs officials.

After watching the woman showing some suspicious signs, customs officers decided to directly check her luggage and discovered the synthetic drugs stashed in a complicated fashion inside her suitcase.

Customs officials have valued  the drugs at an estimated VND13 billion (US$ 613,200.)

Airport authorities have handed the woman and the drugs over to the city’s anti-drug police for investigation.

So far this year the airport customs force have discovered 10 cases of drug trafficking, seizing 25.66 kgs of various drugs and 2,965 synthetic drug tablets, along with making the arrests of 14 people.

The total value of the seized drugs is nearly VND85 billion ($4.01 million).

The most recent case occurred on October 26, 2013 when the airport custom officers caught two Australian nationals carrying 3.5 kilograms of heroin hidden inside their luggage.

These smugglers were identified as J.N.A.J, 31, and K.C.G, 24  both of whom held an Australian passport.

Under Vietnam’s Penal Code, those who are convicted of smuggling more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine will be given a death sentence.

The capital penalty is also applied for those who are indicted for producing or selling 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics.
