A 62-year-old South Korean woman died in hospital yesterday after she passed out while diving to explore coral reef along the Hon Dai island, part of the Cu Lao Cham archipelago, in the central Quang Nam Province.

The victim, Go Jae Suk, was taken to the Cu Lao Cham Clinic in Tan Hiep Commune after she suddenly fainted while diving at about 12 pm on Tuesday, July 30, said Vu Le Bich Co Ltd., which offers diving services to tourists.

The company said its health employees had given the victim first aid before taking her to the clinic, which later transferred her to the Hoi An Hospital, where she died despite intensive treatment.

The woman had a heart disease history and was suspected to die of a heart attack, said Nguyen Van Dung, deputy chairman of the Hoi An City People’s Committee as quoted by VnExpress.

“Her relatives had advised her not to dive but she did not follow the advice. Her relatives have proceeded with procedures to bring the victim’s body back to South Korea,” VnExpress quoted Dung as saying.

Ten days ago, another South Korean woman also died while on her tour in the central city of Da Nang, which borders Quang Nam.

The victim, 26-year-old Choi Jiyeon, was suspected to have been killed by bees while going sightseeing on Ba Na Hills, a popular destination in Da Nang.

The woman was taken to the Da Nang Hospital with severe respiratory failure and heart failure at 7 pm on July 20. She died the next day after her heart repeatedly stopped beating, doctors said.

Dr. Tran Ngoc Thanh, director of Da Nang hospital, said the exact cause of the death remains unknown and the hospital has yet to receive any report that bees on Ba Na Hills attacked Jiyeon.
