The BBC World News is scheduled to air from Aug 19 to 31 a series called “Vietnam Direct”, which features the country’s notable efforts in recovering from its devastating war scars and transforming itself into one of Asia’s most dynamic societies.
The highlights of the show, produced by BBC’s unrivalled reporter network, include “One square mile - Da Nang”, in which reporter Karishma Vaswani provides a deeply moving reportage on the Vietnamese families with two generations suffering the highest concentration of dioxin in the world.
In the program, Vaswani also learns about a major Agent Orange clean-up project jointly launched by the Vietnamese and US governments, and meets the movers and shakers behind the drive to turn Da Nang into the country’s most livable city.
Another of the show’s highlights, “Working lives”, features BBC reporter and presenter Justin Rowlatt’s meetings with five local workers from across the income bracket, including the female CEO of Vinamilk, a local dairy giant, a 96-year-old instructor of “dan tranh” (16-chord zither) and the new university graduates desperately seeking hi-tech jobs.
In “Fast track”, reporter Rajan Datar seeks the answer to how Vietnam has turned its devastating war-torn past into current and future successes. He visits a Vietnam-war bunker lying deep beneath one of Hanoi’s current luxury hotels, and finds out about what the six-star resort on the former colonial prison island of Con Dao now has to offer to its current clients, besides introducing the country’s gorgeous wildlife.
In “Click”, another of BBC World News’ flagship shows on hi-tech, reporter LJ Rich learns about the technologies to improve the performance of motorbikes, locals’ main mode of transport, and make them theft-proof.
Throughout the show, BBC Chief Business Correspondent Linda Yueh will also interview those who have shaped the country’s business from July 19 to 23.
The programs will be broadcast at different times on Aug 24 and broadcast again on Aug 25 and will also be available on bbc.com.
According to Nguyen Van Tinh, head of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s International Cooperation Department, as the project to promote Vietnam on BBC programs, which is partnered by the ministry and the BBC Asia Pacific, has been stalled due to financial reasons, the “Vietnam Direct” series plays a crucial role in promoting the country’s friendly, modern and dynamic image.
Recent BBC’s Country Direct seasons have focused on Croatia, Mozambique, Canada, Georgia, Ecuador and Qatar and its October show is on Singapore.
