Police in Ho Chi Minh City have arrested 33-year-old Ha Chan Chinh, a city resident, for illegally bringing six rhino horns from Mozambique to Vietnam.

A stinking odor emitted by the horns, which weighed 16.26 kg and were hidden in his luggage, prompted police officers at Tan Son Nhat International Airport to examine Chinh’s luggage when he arrived there on January 6.

Chinh, who has a permanent residence in Go Vap District’s Ward 16, had flown from Mozambique to Doha, Qatar Bangkok before arriving in Vietnam that day.

Having no documents related to the horns, Chinh confessed to investigators that he had trafficked the horns from Mozambique.
The horns had been sawn off rhinos that had been shot dead in Africa, Chinh said.

A similar case occurred at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi on November 4, 2012 when customs officers seized seven rhino horns hidden in the luggage of two passengers who had arrived from Qatar.

The horns weighed 23.5 kg in total and were wrapped in many layers of plastic and silver papers.

The total value of the horns is estimated at tens of billions of dong (VND1 billion = US$48,000).
