Coffee shop stops campaign favoring tall women

An Australia coffee company in Vietnam has stopped a fiercely criticized promotion campaign that offers free drinks to long-legged local women.

In its promotional campaign “Buy one get one free”, the company said: “We will offer free drinks to women who measure at least 1.65m (5ft6 inches) to support a government campaign to increase the average national height for Vietnamese women.”
The campaign was supposed to run from December 12, 2012 to January 12, 2013.
But immediately after being published on the company’s Facebook fan page, the campaign has received a lot of negative comments with the majority saying it is offensive to Vietnamese women.
“If the promotional campaign is launched outside Vietnam, the company would be sued for ‘customer discrimination’,” said a Facebook user nicknamed Tit Tho Lo.
Nguyen Ngoc Hanh, another netizen, commented: “Long-legged girl campaigns can't lure any one in. You guys need an ads agency before it's too late!!!"
“There are a lot of factors affecting height growth and a major factor is genetics. So, how does the company’s promotional campaign help increase Vietnamese national average height?” a Facebook user raised a question.
“I think instead of running the campaign, it will be successful if the company sets up a fund to offer free milk to poor children,” he added.

The public criticism has prompted the company to cancel the said promotion program as of December 10. On its facebook page, the company wrote: “Thanks for your feedback. Our initial idea might be misleading. However, as we have received many negative comments, we will temporarily cancel the promotion. Please accept our sincere apologies.”
